United Nations World Summit

Promoting nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.

The World Summit 2005 will take place from September 14 to 16 at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York. At the summit, over 170 heads of state and government will try to reach major decisions on ending poverty, promoting human rights, fighting terrorism and helping countries recover from deadly conflict.

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has appealed the leaders to also reach an agreement for the nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, considering these as the major threats to global peace and security. According Kofi Annan "The 2005 World Summit is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the worlds to come together and take action on grave global threats that require bold global solutions. It is also a chance to revitalise the United Nations itself. It is, in short, an opportunity for all humankind."
